Episode 53: The Goodness Of The Shepherd - Psalm 23:4-6

What does it really mean to call God our Good Shepherd?

In this episode of Refuge & Strength, Pastor b.Side concludes the study of Psalm 23 by exploring verses 4–6 and examining what David’s words reveal about God’s goodness, protection, correction, provision, and eternal promises.

David writes about walking through “the valley of the shadow of death,” yet he refuses to live in fear because he knows the Shepherd is with him. In this study, we explore the significance of that distinction: the believer may walk through dark and difficult circumstances, but those circumstances do not have the final word. God remains present, sovereign, and faithful to His people.

The episode takes a deeper look at the rod and staff of the Shepherd, considering how God uses both correction and gentle guidance to protect His people and lead them toward righteousness. Even when His discipline is painful, it ultimately expresses His love and fosters spiritual growth.

We also examine David’s declaration that God prepares a table “in the presence of my enemies” and anoints his head with oil. These images point beyond material prosperity toward God’s divine appointment, spiritual equipping, purpose, and protection. As the Good Shepherd, God doesn’t simply rescue His sheep—He equips them to accomplish His purposes, even when they are surrounded by opposition.

Finally, we arrive at the climax of Psalm 23:

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

What ultimate goodness does God promise His people?

According to David, it isn't merely comfort, prosperity, or the fulfillment of earthly desires. The greatest promise is God Himself. The true hope of heaven isn't simply the good things God provides—it is dwelling in the presence of the One who is the source of all goodness, mercy, peace, and life.

In this episode, Pastor b.Side challenges us to look beyond God's blessings and recognize the Good Shepherd as the ultimate prize. God leads, protects, provides, corrects, equips, and ultimately brings His people into His presence forever.

Join us for this powerful conclusion to our study of Psalm 23 and discover why the Shepherd's goodness is ultimately found in the Shepherd Himself.
