Episode 61: One Desire - Psalm 27:1-4

What if the greatest problem with our prayer life isn’t that God isn’t answering—but that we’re asking for the wrong things?

In this episode of Refuge & Strength, Pastor b.Side begins a two-part study of Psalm 27 by examining verses 1–4 and exploring one of the most important questions for every believer: What should we truly desire?

King David declares that the LORD is his light, salvation, and strength, giving him confidence even when surrounded by enemies and facing circumstances that could threaten his life. But David’s greatest confidence wasn’t rooted in his circumstances—it was rooted in his understanding of who God is.

At the center of Psalm 27 is David’s remarkable declaration:

“One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek…”

David’s greatest desire wasn’t wealth, success, safety, influence, or even the blessings God could provide. His desire was God Himself. David wanted to dwell in the presence of the LORD, behold His beauty, and seek Him continually.

This episode explores why our natural desires so often compete with the things of God and how Scripture calls us to redirect our hearts toward what is eternal and spiritual. From Adam and Eve’s desire for something beyond God’s provision to David’s singular pursuit of God’s presence, Psalm 27 challenges us to consider whether the things we spend our time, energy, and prayers pursuing are truly capable of satisfying our souls.

Ultimately, Psalm 27 points us toward a simple but profound truth: nothing in this life compares with God Himself.
