Episode 52: The Good Shepherd - Psalm 23:1-3
In this episode, we look to Psalm 23 and begin exploring one of Scripture’s most beloved descriptions of God: the LORD as our Shepherd.
David begins Psalm 23 by declaring, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” But what does it really mean for God to be our Shepherd? And how does this truth relate to contentment, peace, purpose, and how we understand God’s blessings?
In Part 1, we dive into Psalm 23:1–3, examining the Hebrew concept of Jehovah Ra’ah — “the LORD our Shepherd.” Through the imagery of a shepherd and his sheep, we explore God’s character as our Leader, Provider, and Protector, while considering what David’s words teach us about humility and dependence on God.
This study also challenges the tendency to pursue God merely for what He can give us. The blessings of God—rest, peace, provision, guidance, and prosperity—are ultimately meant to point us back to God Himself and His glory. David’s contentment was not rooted in comfortable circumstances, but in knowing and trusting the One who was leading him.
We also connect Psalm 23 to the words of Jesus in John 10, where He identifies Himself as “the Good Shepherd” who gives His life for the sheep. What does Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection reveal about the true path of righteousness? How does following the Good Shepherd change our understanding of suffering, sacrifice, contentment, and eternal hope?
This episode is ultimately an invitation to look beyond the blessings and focus on the One who provides them.
The LORD is our Shepherd. He leads. He provides. He protects. He restores. And ultimately, He leads His people to Himself.
Join us for Part 1 of this powerful study through Psalm 23, and come back for Part 2 as we continue through verses 4–6.
