Episode 54: The Creator And Controller - Psalm 24:1-6

Sep 1, 2026  •  Brandon Alvillar

What does it mean for God to be the Creator and Controller of everything in heaven and on earth?

And what does His absolute authority have to do with our salvation, righteousness, and relationship with Him?

In this episode of Refuge & Strength, Pastor b.Side begins a two-part study of Psalm 24, exploring verses 1–6 and examining what this powerful psalm reveals about the identity, authority, holiness, and saving work of God.

Psalm 24 opens with a declaration that everything belongs to the LORD: “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness.” David points us toward the Hebrew name YAHWEH, emphasizing God as the eternally self-existing and self-sustaining Creator. God didn't simply make the world and walk away. He is the source of creation, the sustainer of life, and the ultimate authority over everything He has made.

But Psalm 24 quickly moves from God's authority over creation to a much deeper question:

Who can stand in the presence of such a holy God?

David describes those who may ascend the hill of the LORD as having “clean hands and a pure heart.” Yet how can sinful, corrupted people possibly meet God's standard of holiness? Can we purify ourselves through good works, religious activity, or human effort?

This episode explores why the answer is no—and why that truth points directly to the grace of God.

Pastor b.Side examines David's teaching about God's righteousness as a gift, connecting Psalm 24 to the biblical doctrine of justification by faith and ultimately to the person and work of Jesus Christ. Because God is the Creator and Controller of all things, He alone has the authority and power to transform His creation, cleanse what is corrupted, and provide the righteousness necessary to dwell in His presence.

The study also explores what David means when he describes “the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face.” Biblical faith isn't merely about pursuing the blessings God can provide. It is about pursuing God Himself—seeking His character, nature, identity, goodness, and purposes as revealed through His Word.

In this first half of Psalm 24, we consider:

Why everything belongs to YAHWEH because He is the Creator.

What God's self-existing and self-sustaining nature means for His authority over creation.

Why God's holiness creates a separation between sinful humanity and His presence.

Why human effort cannot produce the righteousness God requires.

How God's righteousness is given as a blessing rather than earned through works.

How Psalm 24 points forward to the saving work of Jesus Christ.

What it means to be part of the true people of God.

Why seeking God's face is fundamentally different from simply seeking God's blessings.

Ultimately, Psalm 24 directs our attention away from ourselves and toward the One who created, sustains, governs, saves, and transforms His people.

God is YAHWEH. He is the Creator. He is the Controller. He is the source of righteousness. And He is the One who makes a way for His people to dwell in His presence.
