What does it actually mean to love God?

Psalm 18 gives us a powerful picture. David doesn’t begin by telling us what he can do for God—he begins by declaring who God is.

“I will love You, O LORD, my strength.” — Psalm 18:1

In Part 1 of this 6-part study, we dive into Psalm 18:1–3 and explore the biblical meaning behind David’s declaration of love for the LORD.

David had experienced intense opposition, danger, fear, and the threat of death. Yet God delivered him. And David’s response wasn’t simply gratitude for what God had done—David was drawn toward God because of who God is.

David recognized the LORD as his:

🪨 Rock — the immovable foundation of his salvation

🏰 Fortress — the exalted place of safety and security

🛡️ Deliverer — the One who rescues from overwhelming threats

💪 Strength — the source of his ability to endure

🛡️ Shield — his protection in the midst of battle

🏆 Horn of Salvation — the source of victory

🙌 Stronghold — the place where he could retreat and trust

David didn’t trust in his own strength, resources, weapons, experience, or ability.

He trusted the LORD.

And that’s where biblical love begins.
